Here is a huge specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found was filled with water. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the gastropod is well defined. The black fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well centered on the large squared plate of shale that also contains crinoid stems, a crinoid cup, and brachiopods. This is a massive specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
