This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a fine specimen of Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is its natural color. The iridescent shell of this ammonite is very easily seen. It is almost opalescent in nature - very shiny. The large specimen is somewhat weathered on the back side, but the display side is quite aesthetic.
