This is a very unusual Mammoth fossil. It is a tooth in jaw from the Woolly Mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius. This specimen was found in the Rhine River, near Worms, Germany. The jaw has a complete tooth intact and tightly rooted in the jaw. This is a rare find - usually only loose teeth are found. Another unusual feature of this jaw is that the tooth is so well preserved - the wear patern on the molar is simply textbook (see photo #2) The tooth and root measure a full 6 inches tall.  This is a great specimen of a rare European Mammoth jaw with tooth still embedded.
