This is a very attractive ammonite. It is an uncommon Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous nodes and ribs that are quite coarse. The keel also has a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod has the iridescent red nacre beautifully displayed in a wide variety of shades. The ammonite was prepared fully free of matrix for optimal display. This is a very fine example of Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Fox Hills Formation.
