Here is a great fossil echinoderm. This is Rhenocystis lapendulata from the Devonian of Germany. The quarries that produce this roofing slate are now closed. The only way to obtain the unusual fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This cystoid is complete with both arms, the theca, and the stem. It is extremely well preserved and is quite "showy". The fossil is replaced by iron pyrite or "fool's gold". The golden fossil is beautifully centered on the squared plate of roofing slate. This is a superb example of this primitive Devonian echinoderm from a "classic" site.
