This is an excellent ammonite. It is a large Placenticeras meeki from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This 3-dimensional specimen has been removed from the matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. This type of ammonite is quite lenticular in shape with a very sharp keel. Both sides of this unusual ammonite are very colorful and display the polished iridescence beautifully. Some sutures are displayed on both sides of the fossil cephalopod. This is an extremely displayable specimen of an ammonite that is becoming very difficult to obtain in this condition.
