Here is a very nice fossil cephalopod. This is Hoploscaphites nicolletii from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type has many ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on either side. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. Much of the iridescent nacre is still present, and a many beautiful colors are displayed. The ammonite has a section missing, which is quite unusual. It is the correct shape to be a large bite mark from a large fish or Mosasaur. This is a very interesting example of Hoploscaphites from the Cretaceous.
