This is a fabulous ammonite fossil. It is a split pair Hoploscaphites nicolleti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod has the living chamber present, and the iridescent nacre beautifully displays a wide variety of colors. The ammonite was split out of a large, natural block of concretionary matrix - the matrix was retained and is offer here with the ammonite! This is a very displayable example of Hoploscaphites with its original matrix intact.
