This is a very attractive ammonite. It is a Hoploscaphites nicolleti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod has a colorful shell - the iridescent nacre beautifully displays a wide variety of colors. The ammonite is wonderfully perched on the natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable example of Hoploscaphites from the Fox Hills Formation.
