This is a spectacular thrombolite slab from the Precambrian of Western Australia. Authorities believe that thrombolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this thrombolite is over 650 million years old! Thrombolites and stromatolites are very similar - they were both built by cyanobacteria, but stromatolites consist of layered accretions - thrombolites are clotted accretionary structures. This colorful slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique depositional pattern of the thrombolite is beautifully showcased, and the different shades of the mineral replacement are simply awesome. This is an excellent example of this very uncommon thrombolite from Down Under.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally. A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
