This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a large specimen of Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Cretaceous of Montana. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a somewhat squared keel. There is one rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is its natural color. The shiny, iridescent shell of this ammonite is very easily seen. The ammonite is well displayed on the natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable example of this unusual type of iridescent ammonite from Montana.
