This is a very attractive ammonite. It is a colorful Scaphites sp. from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are quite wide. The keel is rounded with a row of small nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod has the inner whorls present, and the iridescent nacre beautifully displays a wide variety of colors (MUCH better than the photos show!). The ammonite is wonderfully perched on the natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable example of Scaphites from the Fox Hills Formation.
