This is an absolutely beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a fabulous specimen of Jeletzkytes nebrascensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is its amazing natural color. The iridescence of this ammonite is simply awesome. It appears brownish in the photo, but it flashes pinks and greens and is almost opalescent in nature - it is much more brilliant in person! Also, the ammonite is large, EXTREMELY 3-dimensional, and complete all the way to the aperture. The specimen is wonderfully positioned on a large, natural block of dense, concretionary matrix that also contains a sutured Sphenodiscus lenticularis. This is one of the most displayable US ammonite plates we have ever had. And it is also one of the impressive of this type we have ever seen.
