This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a fine specimen of Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Pierre Shale of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat squared keel. There is one rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. Some of the iridescent shell of this ammonite is is still present. This is a nice example of an ammonite from the Pierre Shale.
