This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a fine specimen of Hoploscaphites cheyennesis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a squared keel. There is one rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is that it is very 3-D and displays well on the matrix block. The iridescent shell of this ammonite is very easily seen. This is an unusual type of iridescent ammonite from the Black Hills.
