This is a fabulous ammonite fossil. It is a natural block of FOUR ammonites from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. The largest ammonite is an excellent example of Hoploscaphites nicolleti. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. The Hoploscaphites has the living chamber present, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed. The other three ammonites are Discoscaphites conradi. All of the ammonites are very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The ammonites are wonderfully preserved in a large, natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very collectible grouping of ammonites from the Fox Hills Formation.
