This is a very distinct US ammonite. It is a large Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from South Dakota. This specimen is extremely 3-dimensional and complete all the way to the aperture. The cephalopod exhibits amazingly fine detail, and the reddish, nacreous shell of the ammonite is intact and beautifully preserved. The ammonite is fully free of matrix, and can be viewed from the back side as well. This is a very nice Hoploscaphites nebrascensis ammonite fossil from the Black Hills.
