This is a very large specimen of Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. The fossil cephalopod is extremely inflated and complete all the way down to the aperture, which is rare for a Hoploscaphites of this size. The faint ribbing pattern and the nodes around the circumference of the ammonite are nicely preserved and well displayed. The iridescent mother-of-pearl shell is mostly intact and beautifully preserved. The aesthetic ammonite is well showcased on the natural concretionary matrix block which also contains other fossils! This is a HUGE, top quality display ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation. (The color and iridescence are much better in person than the photo shows.)
