This is a very large cystoid fossil. It is a detailed example of Caryocrinites ornatus from the Rochester Shale of New York. This type of primitive echinoderm has a somewhat ovate cup comprised of large, highly ornamented plates - the plate structure of this specimen is easily seen. A LONG stem is still intact, and MANY arms are even preserved (RARE). The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well showcased on the large, rectangular block of shale. This is a very fine specimen of Caryocrinites from New York that is complete down to the holdfast.
