This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a colorful Hoploscaphites nicolletti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the golden brown iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed. The ammonite is wonderfully preserved free of matrix - both sides of the ammonite can be seen. This is a very nice Hoploscaphites nicolletti from the Fox Hills Formation.
