Here is a fabulous specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is now filled with water. There is a huge specimen preserved on this plate. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the gastropod is well defined - even the very tiny inner coils of the specimen are intact. The brown fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well showcased on the squared plate of shale that also contains another gastropod and SIX brachiopods! This is a textbook specimen of Silurian gastropods and brachiopods from this classic site.
