This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a fabulous specimen of Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is its amazing natural color. The iridescent ammolite of this ammonite is very easily seen. It flashes striking lilac colors and is almost opalescent in nature (better than the photo shows). The specimen is wonderfully showcased on the natural block of dense, concretionary matrix. This is a very colorful, iridescent ammonite from the Black Hills.
