Here is a top quality stromatolite, Inzeria intia, from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This rare stromatolite is estimated to be about 2 billion years old! These closely packed stromatolites are believed to have been deposited in conditions that subjected them to intermittent periods of submergence, possibly seasonal in nature. This chunk of stromatolite has been sliced with a diamond saw and highly polished on one side for optimal display. The tubular structures and layered patterns of the stromatolite are easily seen, and the different colors of mineral replacement are nicely showcased. This is a very interesting and distinct stromatolite specimen from an unusual location.
