This is a fabulous example of a fossil stromatolite. This is Conophyton sp. from the Precambrian of Bolivia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is 2.2 to 2.4 billion years old! The very large slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The slab is also one full inch thick - quite substantial! The layered depositional pattern of this stromatolite is beautifully preserved. The different colors and unique pattern make for a striking exhibit. This is a very collectible specimen of a Conophyton stromatolite from an unusual location.
