This is a very nice US ammonite. It is a fine Discoscaphites conradi from the Late Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a rounded keel. This 3-dimensional ammonite is well displayed, and the natural coloration is easily seen - the iridescent coloration of the fossil is quite striking. The ammonite is wonderfully preserved and is fully free of matrix - the back side also displays beautifully. This is a very displayable example of this colorful ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
