This is an extremely rare fossil. It is a distinct Spider (Araneae) from the Eocene of Colorado. Spiders are extremely rare in the fossil record. This specimen has the head, body, and long legs intact and easily seen. The fossil displays beautifully on the natural, unbroken plate of shale that also contains a large fly in the upper right corner! A spider preserved on shale is very rare, but one from the Green River Formation of Colorado is almost unheard of.
