This is a colorful ammonite fossil. It is a colorful Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed. The ammonite is wonderfully preserved and is free of matrix - the back side shows the inner whorls extremely well. This is a very displayable Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Fox Hills Formation.
