Here is a spectacular plate of ammonites from the Jurassic of Russia. There are three gorgeous specimens of Cosmoceras proniae on the concretionary matrix. This type of ammonite has many, many ribs and a sharp keel. All three of the ammonites are very 3-dimensional and exhibit fine detail. The inner whorls of all three cephalopods are easily seen. Perhaps the most striking feature of this piece is the color of the fossils. The ammonites retain the nacreous shell and are wonderfully iridescent. They almost appear as if they were replaced by fire opal - the colors are that terrific. The colors run from red to green depending on the angle of the light. (The actual colors are much more intense than what the picture shows.) The fossils are aesthetically perched on the matrix plate. This is a stunning plate of extremely colorful ammonites.
