Here is a very detailed fossil sponge. This is Diagonella sp. from the Cambrian of Utah. Sponges are very uncommon in the fossil record, due to their delicate nature. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united - they generally required quiet water for preservation. There is a very detailed example of this urn-shaped sponge on this plate. The fossil sponge's striking, red-orange color contrasts well with the lighter color matrix. The sponge is also well showcased on the large plate of shale. This is a very collectible example of this uncommon Cambrian invertebrate.
