Here is a very pretty specimen of fossil bivalves. These are Clinocardium meekianum from the Pliocene of California. The valves of the ''cockle'' are very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibit great detail. The fine radial ornamentation is clearly defined, and the growth lines are easily seen. The whitish color of the fossils contrasts nicely with the grey-green matrix. The mollusks are extremely inflated and make for a stunning display. This is a very aesthetic example of a pair of fossil bivalves.
