Here is a very distinct specimen of Archimedes sp. from Missouri. This unusual, corkscrew-shaped bryozoan is only found the Mississippian of North America! This bryozoan colony attached itself to the ocean floor with the spiraling fronds in an upward position. The fossil is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detai - a few of the fronds are preserved, which is quite unusual. The dark fossil is easily seen on the grey matrix plate. This is a fine example of this strange-looking bryozoan.
