This is a very rare stromatolite slab from the Precambrian Riphean Layers of Russia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This particular stromatolite has been dated to up to 1.4 billion years old! This extremely detailed specimen has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolites is beautifully showcased, and the different shades of the mineral replacement are quite striking. This is a very fine example of this extremely rare stromatolite from Russia.
