Here is a large specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is was filled with water. This is a very distinct specimen. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the gastropod is well defined - even the very tiny inner coils of the specimen are intact. The snail is extremely rare in that there is a large bryozoan AND a tiny crinoid root system preserved on the shell! This is a super cool specimen of a Silurian gastropod with other organisms growing on its surface!
