This is a wonderful specimen of Ecphora gardnerae from the Miocene of Maryland. This type of gastropod has been officially designated as the ''State Fossil of Maryland''. This 3-dimensional fossil is still partially encased in its surrounding matrix. The ornate gastropod is extremely well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The broad ornamental ridges that encircle the fossil snail are clearly defined. The fine growth lines of the Ecphora are easily seen. This is a great example of this beautiful gastropod from the St. Mary's Formation.
