Here is a nice fossil bivalve from a classic location. This is Mazonomya mazonensis from the Mazon Creek fauna of Illinois. This famous site (Pit 11) has been closed to collecting for a number of years. The bivalve is well preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart are intact. The clam exhibits fine detail - the growth lines are wonderfully displayed. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well showcased in the concretion. This is a great example of a rare fossil bivalve from the Coal Age.
