This is an excellent specimen of a rare stromatolite. This is a Yesnaby Stromatolite from the Middle Devonian of Scotland. This specimen was acquired from an old English collection. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is about 400 million years old! The fine slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The layered depositional pattern of this stromatolite is beautifully preserved. The different colors and unique pattern make for a striking exhibit. This is a very cool example of a very rare stromatolite from the United Kingdom.
