This is a colorful specimen of Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. The fossil cephalopod is very inflated and complete all the way down to the aperture. The faint ribbing pattern and the nodes around the circumference of the ammonite are nicely preserved. The red-brown mother-of-pearl shell is mostly intact and beautifully displayed. The ammonite is well positioned on the natural matrix block, which also contains a large, nearly complete Sphenodiscus ammonite on the back side (not pictured). This is a very pretty display fossil from the Fox Hills Formation.
