Here is a very unusual fossil from a classic location. This is Achistrum welleri, a sea cucumber, from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. This famous site (Pit 11) has been closed to collecting for a number of years. The fossil is well preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart are intact. The animal exhibits nice detail, for a sea cucumber! The fossil has good color and contrast and is well showcased in the concretion. This is a great example of a fossil sea cucumber from an old collection.
