This is a very uncommon brachiopod from an unusual location. This is Spirifer grimesi from the Mississippian of Iowa. The fossil is veryy 3-dimensional and has excellent natural color. The large brachiopod exhibits extremely fine detail - the ribbing and ornamentation of the fossil lamp shell is easily seen. The brachiopod is free of matrix, both front and back valves are present. This is a very cool, hard-to-find brachiopod from the Mississippian of the Midwest.
