Here is a large specimen of a very rare cystoid. This is Callocystites jewetti from the Silurian of New York. This cystoid is extremely large for the type. It is very inflated and exhibits excellent detail. The highly ornamented plates are easily seen. The lengthy stem is still tightly attached to the cystoid, which is quite unusual. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is beautifully displayed on the rectangular plate of shale. This is one of the largest single examples of this scarce cystoid we have seen. It is a very displayable example of this primitive echinoderm.
