This is an excellent specimen of a rare stromatolite. This is a Yesnaby Stromatolite from the Middle Devonian of Scotland. This specimen was acquired from an old English collection. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is about 400 million years old! The fine slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The layered depositional pattern of this stromatolite is beautifully preserved. The different colors and unique pattern make for a striking exhibit. And the back side shows fabulous preservation of the unpolished layering of this type of stromatolite - possibly a better display than the polished side! This is a very collectible example of a rare stromatolite from the United Kingdom.
