This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a colorful Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and several distinct nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The green, pink, and purple mother-of-pearl iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed (hard to see in photo). The ammonite is wonderfully preserved and is fully free of matrix - the back side is also irridescent. This is a very displayable Discoscaphites conradi from the Fox Hills Formation.
