Here is a very rare fossil. This is a large Merychippus sejunctus (Early Horse) tooth from Pawn Creek, Colorado. This specimen was acquired from the famous Chance Collection. This type of horse is an extinct proto-horse in the Equus line. These horses had three toes on each foot, showing that the evolutionary step to modern horses had not been reached at that point. This tooth is quite large (almost four inches long!) and very distinct. The tooth has a wonderful natural wear pattern, easily seen in the photo. The molar is very well preserved and has a beautiful natural-brown patina. This is a very collectible specimen for any fossil collector, or a great gift for a horse lover! (Comes with Dr. Chance's original reference photo and ID notes.)
