This is a wonderful fossil bivalve. It is a very large Chesapecten nefrens from the Miocene of Maryland. This colorful scallop has both valves intact and tightly articulated. Both of the ''ears'' of the fossil scallop are present, and the coarse radial ornamentation of the shell is easily seen. Both sides of the fossil are very clean and display beautifully. One side has fossil barnacle "scars" still attached, which is quite cool. This is a huge (a full SIX AND A HALF INCHES ACROSS!) example of this classic fossil scallop.
