This is a very striking stromatolite slab from the Precambrian of China. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This thick slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolites is beautifully displayed, and the different shades of mineral replacement are easily seen. This is an excellent specimen of this unusual stromatolite that is estimated to be 1.5 to 2.0 billion years old!
