This is a very unusual fossil. This is a split pair of colorful sponges (Vauxia?) from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada. This fossil was found in a single layer and nowhere else in the formation, as far as we know. This distinct specimen is nicely preserved and exhibits fine detail. The tubular shape of the organism is beautifully displayed, the textured pattern is quite evident, and the small holdfast at the bottom is easily seen. The fossil has great color and contrast and is well showcased on each of the plates of shale. This is a very rare and collectible part/counterpart fossil, similar to fossils from the Burgess Shale.
