Here is a large specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The original quarry is now filled with water and closed to collecting. There is a very nice example of this gastropod on the plate. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is well defined - even the very tiny coils at the top of the specimen are intact. The dark brown fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The snail is well showcased on the edge of the natural plate of shale. This is a cool specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
