This is a very beautiful stromatolite slab from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. Pilbaria perplexa is believed to have grown in a shallow marine lagoon environment with rare periods of emergence. It is also believed that this stromatolite is 2 billion years old! This striking slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the natural pink-orange color of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a fabulous example of this very uncommon stromatolite from Down Under.
