Here is a HUGE example of Baculites sp. from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This impressive specimen was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. Baculitidae are characterized by an ammonitella (coiled embryonic shell) followed by a long straight shaft. This specimen is a VERY LONG portion of that shaft. This Baculites has been removed from the surrounding matrix, is very 3-dimensionally preserved, and displays well from all sides. The coloration of the partially-irridescent outer shell is fully natural. This is a very collectible Baculites from the US Badlands.
