Here is a fabulous example of a Middle Cambrian cystoid. This is a beautiful Gogia palmeri (label says G. palmeri, but could now be G. juvalorum) from Idaho. This specimen was found by George Lee in 1976. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. The preservation of this primitive echinoderm is spectacular. The long holdfast is intact, the large-plated, ornate calyx is extremely detailed, and the long, segmented arms are even preserved in an aesthetic, splayed fashion. The cystoid has great natural color and contrast and is beautifully displayed on the colorful plate of shale. This is a textbook specimen of this primitive echinoderm from the Spence Shale, found almost 40 years ago!
